From downtown Damariscotta, travel south on Rt. 129/130 for 3 miles. Veer to the right onto Rt 129 and travel 3.5 miles. Turn right onto Clarks Cove Rd and travel 1 mile. The DMC is on the right.
About Us
The Darling Marine Center is the marine laboratory of the University of Maine. Our tripartite mission of research, teaching and service touches the local community, the State of Maine and beyond.
The DMC has a year-round population of about 50 people. In the summer our population swells to over 100 people with undergraduate interns, course participants and visiting scientists.
Faculty, staff and students at the DMC conduct field and laboratory research encompassing a broad range of marine science disciplines ranging from microbiology, biogeochemistry and optical oceanography, to marine archaeology, invertebrate zoology and ecology, fisheries research, deep-sea biology and shellfish aquaculture.
The DMC is the site of many UMaine accredited courses for undergraduate and graduate students. The bulk of these courses are offered as part of the fall Semester By the Sea program or the Summer University program. Though most of our students hale from the main campus in Orono, all courses are open to students from outside institutions as well.
The University of Maine‘s Darling Marine Center is part of the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture. Faculty at the Center are members of the University’s School of Marine Sciences. The Darling Marine Center is a member of the National Association of Marine Laboratories and the New England Association of Marine and Great Lakes Laboratories. Dr. Heather Leslie is the Director of the Darling Marine Center.
