Thomaston Place Auction Galleries - August Splendor 2022
The Aug. 26, 27 and 28 “Splendor” sale at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries presents a feast of important artwork, plus amazing selections of American folk art and colonial furnishings, modernist design, antiquities and decorative pieces.
Many works come from the estate of American art collector and Nashville dealer Gary Haynes. Haynes’ accumulated collection was considered “so valuable in its artistic significance that it could easily be featured in one of the world’s finest museums.”
This group includes works by Jamie Wyeth; Andrew Wyeth; Stephen Scott Young; and N.C. Wyeth. The Haynes consignment also includes a variety of Wyeth prints, photos and ephemera.
Fine art from the New York estate of artist, traveler and collector Syril Frank is also featured, with two sculptural works by Louise Nevelson. Art Nouveau masterworks purchased during her travels will include a pair of bronze figures by Agathon Leonard; an ivory and wood sculpture by Paul Philippe; and a bronze figural vase by Charles Korschann.
Featured among ancient and medieval art from the Frank collection will be a 15th C. Florentine relief stucco of the Madonna and Child, a Chinese Tang Dynasty tomb guardian figure, and a funerary mask of an Egyptian pharaonic official.
The sale offers a vast inventory of Maine art, including work by Marguerite Zorach; Dahlov Ipcar; Harrison Bird Brown, Stephen Etnier, William Thon, Samuel Colman, Andrew George Winter, William Zorach, Waldo Peirce and many others.
Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ summer auctions always include an outstanding offering of Americana.
Featured folk art will include an American Federal period carved giltwood architectural eagle; a prancing horse weathervane by Jewell, a marine diorama by Anne-Emmanuelle Marpeau; plus ship models, scrimshaw, baskets and sea chests.
Rounding out the sale will be a collection of estate jewelry and watches, as well as tea caddies, fine silver, garden items, musical instruments, Adirondack furniture and oriental carpets.
