Colonial Pemaquid by Lantern Light
Grab your flashlight and head down to Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site for an evening lantern walk. In this family friendly event, park personnel will guide visitors, by lantern light, through the various eras of history represented at Pemaquid, from the partially reconstructed Fort William Henry to the excavated Pemaquid Village and Olde Fort Burial Ground.
Don’t be surprised if your twilight tour includes an encounter with some of the inhabitants of the village and a challenge from an 18th century soldier on guard duty at Fort William Henry.
Adding a dramatic dimension to this evening’s walk, will be Colonial Pemaquid Student Interns portraying individuals associated with the site’s history. Illuminated by lantern light, visitors will meet former Pemaquid residents, Mrs. MacFarland, who was fired upon by an Indian warrior in 1747 but escaped and John Gyles, a young man who was captured by native Americans during King William’s war in 1689.
This free event is sponsored by the Friends of Colonial Pemaquid, a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the historical significance of the site. The rain date for this event is Thursday, August 7.
Visitors are invited to return to Colonial Pemaquid on Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11 and experience a 17th Century Encampment during Olde Bristol Days. The outdoor interpretive weekend will showcase civilian and military aspects of 17th century life, with demonstrations of equipment, crafts, cooking, children’s games, etc. Hours are 9 AM to 5 PM each day.
